Aspiring actors undergo a tedious process in auditions before they can get the role in a commercial or film. In this kind of industry, competition is always tough. 1. Overall look. This doesn’t pertain to your physical appearance only but your overall presence. You need to present yourself as the role you’re targeting. Your face, body, how you stand, and your expressions and gestures should be compatible with the character that the casting agencies are looking for. This will require a great amount of calculation on your part, but be flexible in order to look and become the person they are looking for.

2. Ability to act. You want to be flawless when you demonstrate your acting skills. When you’re acting, you don’t want to appear like you are acting. You need to look and sound as natural as possible. You need to be able to present yourself as the character instead of someone just playing that character – so be completely convincing.

3. Complete professionalism. Arriving on time, having your lines completely memorized, looking good, and being ready to take every instruction well are all qualities of a professional that casting directors look for.

4. Passionate attitude. This clearly indicates how serious you are about the career you’ve chosen. You need to be able to prove that you’re ready to overcome the challenges that the acting job will present, and be the character. If the directors say you need to lose weight, cut your hair, speak with an accent, learn martial arts or jump off a building, they want to hear that you can do something to make it possible

5. Confidence. This isn’t something that can be faked. You need to be able to show that you believe in yourself and can demonstrate courage, especially when asked to do something very challenging.

A common misconception about modeling is that you need to be pretty, with flawless skin, perfect Jawline, and flat abs. That is one of the most untrue claims that serve as a psychological barrier for many potential models to join this field. Not all clients and projects require pretty faces and many actually need models of marketable looks, that can range from different sizes, ethnicities, and overall body features. Size is also not a concern, as there are many plus-sized models in demand today. Someone has to market the bigger sized clothing and a product that appeal to people in that category, and definitely plus sized is becoming more relevant in the modeling fields of today.

If a credible modeling agency is sending a scouter to the street to recruit new models, it is also sending someone to be the face that represents the agency in the process; it is not going to do so blindly. Much training and knowledge of the modeling and fashion industry are taught to these scouters before they are sent out on the street. They know the different types of looks that the agency wants and that can appeal to a client before they actually approach you and give you an offer. Of course, you also have a part to play and determine the credibility of the agency through proper research online.

Everyone is so busy, who has time for modeling? It’s too much work.

Modeling doesn’t require commitment on the scale of a full-time job nor are you bound to be involved in work that doesn’t fit into your schedule. It can fit in easily into your schedule if you consider that you will be on average receiving one job offer a week with some project commitments going to even three hours or so. Of course, there are longer projects which may take a few days of shoots to finish depending on their requirements. However, the best part is you get to pick up and drop the projects that don’t suit you. In other words, you have full flexibility in your work. However, a word of caution, if you are just starting out in modeling, do not get too picky, and focus on building your portfolio and reputation as a model first.

Nowadays there are so many comments and reviews everywhere, how do I differentiate the good and bad agencies?

This may pose a big concern especially in the age of the internet, where there are many false rumors floating around, and truth tends to get buried in the comments section. It may be hard to distinguish truth from the lies, and usually one only knows the true nature of the work and the modeling process once they sign up for it. One good way is to read reviews from credible sources and websites, and not believe wholesale what you read on forums and blogs which are contentment unregulated. Google and Facebook reviews are one such way where spam and imposter comments are unpublished or removed, and only honest feedback is considered.

Another good way is to find out the models involved in the agency. Are there a good number of models? Are there models who somewhat have a similar look to you? Do they take good effort and care to have a well set-up website? Any model agency has a need to have a good website because it is often the first go-to platform for clients and models. An illegitimate or bad agency can most often be spotted from their bad website maintenance.

Modeling isn’t for me, either I am born as a model or I’m not. There is no in-between.

False! Whether you know this or not modeling takes a lot of hard work, patience and confidence. It is not a job with a fixed timing like 9 to 5

Modeling never comes to you at a fixed and consistent timing, and if you are inflexible to accommodate timings out of the usual 9-5 range modeling will not suit you. The jobs you get won’t also be on a consistent basis, there will be times when you will be wishing for your next job, and there will be times in which you will be wishing that you had a day off. Projects come on and off on an irregular basis, as when clients select you. Patience and flexibility are key qualities that you require in this field.

Deals with a hectic schedule

You could be leading a busy and hectic lifestyle like most of the people in the region. Students are also not immune to this lifestyle, and can often forego many of their interests and activities outside of their academic curriculum.

You should know to balance between studies and a high fashion career in modeling. The hectic schedule may seem grueling, but it shows your hard work and determination to achieve your dreams.

Don’t change your hair without informing your modeling agency

Note that the agency won’t scold you for changing your hair color or cutting your hair off, but sometimes when a client requests for a particular type of hair (e.g. shampoo advertisement client) your hair is an essential part of the modeling. Hence it is wise to inform your agency of any big changes you are making to your look, so they may advise you accordingly.

Modeling is not just for young people

Modeling is a very diverse industry and agencies are always on the lookout for models of various ethnicities, ages, sizes, heights and races without discrimination as clients may have their requests for literally any kind of look. Things You Should Know Before Becoming Model

Any aspiring model has a need or responsibility to know and be familiar with the day-to-day terms and Jargons of the industry.

Agency

This refers to the model agency you have signed up for. Modeling agencies are responsible for their model’s safety, overall job experience, payment and every other aspect of their job.

Bookers

They are also known as model managers and are the main point of contact for models and clients. Bookers have an important responsibility of acquiring clients, selecting the right models and rate of payment for each job. They also have to inform relevant models of job opportunities and every other relevant detail.

Casting Call

Casting calls are different from agency interviews, and specific to clients and the jobs you are applying for as a model. Agency interviews ask general questions and want to find out more about you as person and to see what type of modeling job would suit you best as a model. Casting call met out specific requirements requested by clients, such as specific age, ethnicity, gender that potential clients are expecting.

Client

Client refers to the person or organization that seeks a modeling agency to hire models for their specific project or job need. In general there are 2 categories, commercial and fashion clients. Commercial projects, such as television commercials or print advertisements need people of various types and most models are eligible for these jobs. Another is fashion, whereby clients are usually from editorials, runway modeling etcetera.

Comp card

Short for composite card is a business card for models that is given to clients as well. It contains headshots on the front, and body shots on the back of the card usually. It also contains a model’s vital statistics.

Close-up shot

Another term for headshot or portrait photo where the model’s neck and face are focused upon in the photo (can sometimes include shoulders). Facial features and emotional expressions thus take high importance in these shots.

Portfolio

Contains comp card, test shoots, other project photos and all the important details and information about a model. If a client is interested in a model, a portfolio of that model is presented to the client for their consideration.

Scouters

Sometimes known as a Scouting agent, is the person who is responsible for finding and attracting new and potential models into the agency. They go to city centers and other high profile events such as beach parties to seek for talent, and offer them opportunities to join the agency. Scouters are trained to be aware of the industry needs and are required to be professional in their engagement with the public.

Vital Statistics

These are important numbers that indicate what category of modeling you will belong to. This helps narrow down and place you in jobs that suit your body type. The 3 numbers that consist of your vital stats are the bust, waist and hip size.
